VERO Cell Line:

The Vero cell line is a continuous cell line that was originally derived from the kidney cells of an African green monkey in the 1960s. Vero cells are widely used in biomedical research and vaccine production because they are easy to grow and can be maintained in culture for long periods of time. Vero cells are particularly useful for the production of viral vaccines, including those for measles, mumps, rubella, and polio. They are also commonly used in virology research to study the replication and pathogenesis of various viruses, including coronaviruses and filoviruses. Continuous mammalian cell lines serve as potent tools for life sciences, aiding in the production of various drugs. The Vero cell line is susceptible to multiple viruses and has widely contributed to the creation of vaccines for human use. The Vero epithelial cell line is taken from kidney cells of an African green monkey (Cercopithecus aethiops). Yasumura and Kawakita isolated these cells in 1962 and named the cell line as an abbreviation of “Verda reno” meaning “green kidney” in Esperanto. Vero cells are aneuploidy, continuous, and can be replicated through numerous cycles of division without becoming senescent. Aneuploidy means having an abnormal number of chromosomes. Unique from mammalian cells, the Vero cell line is interferon-deficient since it does not produce type 1 interferons after being infected by viruses. Vero cells are used for multiple purposes, including screening for the toxins such as Escherichia coli. Also, Vero can serve as a host cell line for growing viruses or eukaryotic parasites (Trypanosomatids.) The Vero cell line is a mammalian cell line commonly used for research in the fields of virology, bacteriology, and toxicology. Also, the Vero cell line is an excellent host for studying a range of areas within the field of biomedical therapeutics. Altogen Biosystems provides highly efficient optimized transfection kits for these cells.

Vero Cell Transfection Kit

Figure 1. GAPD mRNA levels were quantified using real-time PCR in the VERO cells transfected with siRNAs targeting GAPD or non-silencing siRNA. Forty-eight hours post-transfection, the cells were harvested and analyzed by real-time PCR for GAPDH mRNA expression levels. Data were normalized against the 18S rRNA signal. Control samples were either mock-transfected or untreated. Values are normalized to untreated sample. Data are means ± SD (n=3).

Figure 2. Protein expression of GAPDH in VERO cells. DNA plasmid expressing GAPDH or siRNA targeting GAPDH were transfected into VERO cells following Altogen Biosystems transfection protocol. At 72 hours post-transfection the cells were analyzed by Western Blot for protein expression levels (normalized by total protein, 10 µg of total protein loaded per each well). Untreated cells used as a negative control.
